Program Overview

Our week together will be to explore the excitement and challenges of painting outdoors in the beautiful Adirondack mountains at Great Camp Sagamore.

Plein Air painting is by nature different from the quiet of the studio with its constant light and pleasant weather condition.  Our aim is to capture the moment outside, one that shows the effects of light with the colors of nature as they appear to our eyes, not the camera.

It is often said that “tonality does the heavy lifting, and color gets the glory”. It will be our task to get the big tonal shapes established first so that we can develop the lush colors that are needed to make our paintings glow.

Being fearless, diving in and trying to “get it down” with simplicity is your mission. My role is to guide you to see the “visual relationships” that are beneath the subjects of the trees, sky and water. Our task in painting is to translate subject matter into a visual pattern that expresses nature - Instructor Bill White
