The iconic Adirondack pack basket has been a trusted companion of guides, woodsmen, and families for generations. Designed to carry everything from tools to provisions through rugged terrain, its sturdy form and distinctive shape have become a symbol of life in the North Country.

During this live demonstration, Linda Scherz will share the history, purpose, and enduring legacy of the Adirondack pack basket. Guests will learn about the materials traditionally used, the weaving techniques that give the basket its strength, and the craftsmanship required to shape and finish each piece.

Linda Scherz

An award-winning basket maker for over 30 years, Linda teaches throughout the United States for various guilds, conferences, art centers and organizations. She enjoys sharing her basketry knowledge and experience with her students. Linda especially enjoys teaching at Great Camp Sagamore.

David J Woodward

Raised at White Pine Camp in the Adirondack Mountains, David comes from a family whose roots in the community stretch back five generations. He has worked as a blacksmith since 1986 and is widely respected for his master craftsmanship and artistic skill. In 1993, he was recognized as one of the nation’s top 200 craftspeople by Early American Life.

Join master artisan Helen Condon for a special braided rug demonstration celebrating one of America’s oldest domestic crafts.

With more than 50 years of experience, Helen carries forward a tradition she first learned at her grandmother’s side — transforming simple strips of fabric into beautifully braided works of art. During this engaging demonstration, she will share the history of rug braiding, explain the process of selecting and blending fabrics, and show how strips are cut, rolled, braided, and stitched into enduring designs.

Guests will also see examples of her distinctive braided baskets, adorned with feathers, fur, and other natural elements, making each piece truly one of a kind.

This is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional craftsmanship up close, ask questions, and gain insight into a timeless art form that blends resourcefulness, creativity, and heart.

Helen Condon

Rug braiding is a skill Helen learned at her grandmother’s side — and one she has lovingly carried forward ever since.

She began selling her rugs in 1976, sharing her remarkable eye for color and pattern with a wider audience. Her thoughtful blending of fabrics results in pieces that are both harmonious and striking. With the addition of feathers, fur, and other natural elements, her braided baskets become truly one-of-a-kind works of art. Helen also makes custom rugs on commission in her studio.

Join us for a special artisan woodcarving demonstration with master carvers Rick and Ellen Bütz and experience the timeless art of carving in the heart of the Adirondacks.

With more than 40 years of combined experience, Rick and Ellen bring extraordinary skill, warmth, and storytelling to their work. Rick is known nationally for his long-running PBS series, Woodcarving with Rick Bütz, where his clear instruction and deep respect for traditional handicraft have inspired generations of carvers. Ellen wrote the scripts and served as production coordinator for six seasons of the Public Television show, and she is also one of Sagamore’s beloved historical tour guides. Her knowledge of camp history and Adirondack culture adds rich context to the craft, connecting each carving to the broader story of the region’s artisans, guides, and makers.

Rick & Ellen Bütz

Rick: After 25 years in a successful woodcarving business, Richard chose a lateral transition into a new career. He gained acceptance into Albany Medical College and became a Physician Assistant. He had the pleasure of serving our Veterans medical needs for many years, retiring in 2016 to return to woodcarving. It has been a valuable and rewarding experience.

Ellen: As a full-time woodcarver Ellen co-authored and photographed 7 instructional books on carving. She wrote the scripts and acted as production coordinator for six seasons of the Public Television show Woodcarving with Rick Bütz. In 1997 she became Executive Director of the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. In 2006 she accepted the position of Executive Director of the Lower Adirondack Region Arts Council in Glens Falls. In this role she increased funding for regional arts programs, and partnered with government and business leaders to promote community economic development through the arts. She retired in 2016 to return to the life of a working artist.
