Program Overview

A beloved Great Camp Sagamore tradition once led by the late Anne LaBastille—ecologist, adventurer, and author of Woodswoman—Women in the Woods celebrates the spirit of community and the restorative power of the natural world.

Rooted in the belief that time spent together in nature strengthens both body and spirit, this women-only retreat offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with others who share a love for the outdoors. Through guided exploration, conversation, and creativity, participants build skills, friendships, and a renewed sense of confidence in the wilderness.

Together, we’ll hike forest trails, paddle the clear waters of Sagamore Lake, practice yoga beneath the trees, and gather around the campfire to share stories, laughter, and reflection. Expert guides and instructors lead sessions on wilderness skills, natural history, and mindful outdoor living, inspiring a deeper connection to both nature and community.

Each year, women return to this program to reconnect with themselves, each other, and the wild places that sustain us. Join this long-standing Sagamore tradition and experience the joy of being fully present in nature—together.

More about Anne LaBastille

Ecologist Anne LaBastille created the life that many people dream about. When she and her husband divorced, she needed a place to live. Through luck and perseverance, she found the ideal spot: a 20-acre parcel of land in the Adirondack mountains, where she built the cozy, primitive log cabin that became her permanent home. Miles from the nearest town, LaBastille had to depend on her wits, ingenuity, and the help of generous neighbors for her survival. In precise, poetic language, she chronicles her adventures on “Black Bear Lake,” capturing the power of the landscape, the rhythms of the changing seasons, and the beauty of nature’s many creatures. Most of all, she captures the struggle to balance her need for companionship and love with her desire for independence and solitude.

Hannah Gibbons-Arthur

Hannah is honored to be a part of the Women in the Woods program. She worked at Great Camp Sagamore for 6 years, and it will always have a special place in her heart. She recently moved to Central New York to raise her babies close to family and now cherishes her time in the Adirondacks even more. Hannah is an Events Coordinator at the Cortland County YMCA and enjoys gardening, hiking, tennis and spending time with family.

Corrie Magee

Corrie lives, works and plays in the Adirondacks. Corrie spends her free time reading, gardening, hiking, paddling, bike riding and camping. She works at the Adirondack Park Agency and is also an Emergency Medical Technician. This summer, she's going to ride her bike from the Adirondacks to Acadia National Park and raise money for an animal rescue.
