Program Overview
The Adirondack Pack Basket stands as one of the most enduring symbols of life in the North Woods—an object shaped by utility, craftsmanship, and generations of tradition. Historically woven in a variety of sizes to suit the daily work of guides, homesteaders, and explorers, the pack basket embodies the resourcefulness and artistry of the Adirondack people.
Join master weaver Linda Scherz for a hands-on weekend immersed in this rich Adirondack craft tradition. Over the course of your stay, you’ll create your own beautiful, functional basket.
In this class, Linda will teach her interpretation of the traditional Adirondack Pack Basket. The Hiker pack is a great size for kids as well as adults and at times referred to as a day pack. Sightseer packs are a great size for teens or adult men and women. Mountaineer pack is a taller pack idea for those who stay longer in the woods.
Students will begin by weaving a plain-weave base using pre-cut spokes, then learn to continuous-weave the sides, level the top, cut and tuck, add a handle, and finish the rim. The final step is adding an adjustable webbing or leather harness for comfortable carrying.
This class welcomes all weavers. Linda will demonstrate techniques, guide your progress, and provide hands-on instruction throughout. Please note that students will work with a drawknife, shave horse, and other sharp tools.
Choose to make a Mountaineer, Sightseer, Hiker or Custom Junior Pack Basket.
