Fishing Creel

This newly designed creel is woven with reed in a continuous weave. There is significant attention to shaping as it is made to conform to being worn on one’s hip. Linda will be guiding students as they weave as this can be a challenge. The rim is double lashed with artificial sinew. Students will cut a lid of leather to fit their woven creel, cut the hole in it, and fit the buckle strap and attach to the creel. The harness will be made prior to class. Students have a choice of nickel or copper hardware. Choice needs to be made when registering.

Approximate Dimensions: 10 ½” x 8” x 7”H

Materials Fee: Fishing Creel $95.00 with silver, $110.00 with copper

This weekend immersion will be held in the secluded Adirondack retreat of the Great Camp Sagamore,  with exclusive and private access to 1,526-acre homestead of the visionary William West Durant. Come experience a masterpiece of Adirondack architecture, a place where America’s most influential people came to take a break from the clamor of their “modern” life. The 27-building Great Camp stands alone on a remote lakeside. Sagamore’s builders gathered the colors, scents, and textures of the wild forest and reassembled them indoors in a style that is now imitated nationwide.

The all-inclusive weekend, healing and wellness program provides an indigenously inspired view of the nature of being human in this 3-dimensional world. Diane and Jordan masterfully weave their unique and innovative healing perspectives with you.  They will share traditional and contemporary indigenous healing practices to help individuals dismantle their trauma patterns and hidden obstacles we have all accumulated because of innate responses to difficult and painful experiences of our lives.  The trauma informed process they share, acknowledges ones past while helping the person step into their personal power and clear the way to reach tomorrows goals with more self-awareness, ease, and clarity.

By attending the 3 ½ -day healing & wellness program, you will Learn:

  • Indigenous healing practices.

  • Focus first on the self, and how to share and support others.

  • Explore the background of indigenous cultural practices.

  • Learn how to get started with personalized rituals and tools for your own growth and healing.

  • Gateway for taking the next step with deeper ceremonial practices.

  • An indigenously inspired view of the nature of being human in the 3-dimensional world.

  • Facets and application of the practices as a basis for trauma-informed care.

Fostering Emergence of the Good Mind is an energetically referenced, emotionally-focused, body-based approach to healing and wellness drawn from a traditional Native healing methodology rooted in the story of Tadodaho; the man with the hair of snakes who was cleansed and healed by the Peacemaker and his delegation.

Chair Caning Workshop

Prices Starting at:

Chair Caning

Spend a few days learning how to cane your own chair during which you’ll learn to weave the traditional 7-step caning pattern. Bring along a chair in good condition in need of a new caned seat. Ideally, the chair seat will be square or rectangular in shape and have fewer than 85 holes drilled into the seat frame. Any repairs and refinishing should be completed before the class begins. Please bring a water bucket, scissors and your chair in sound condition, with the old cane removed, if possible.

Instructor

Chris Hubbard
I’ve always been interested and involved in creating by hand, so taking up chair caning came naturally to me.  As a teenager, I was given my grandmother’s small side chair, which had a seat that was tacked on, made of fabric-covered plywood.  For years that seat served me well, but I was intrigued by the holes in the frame underneath.  By chance, I discovered a kit I could purchase containing the materials and tools needed to re-cane a chair seat.  The kit arrived, a neat bundle of cane, some pegs, an awl, and a booklet with instructions.  With help from two elderly local chair caners, Tip Tyler and Dick Pekins, I found my way through the intricate pattern that creates the traditional design.  I was hooked!

After mastering the well-known pattern of octagons with much guidance from Tip and Dick, I discovered other caning patterns and took up the challenge of learning them, as well as the technique of blind and double blind, or French, caning.  And as I worked with local antique dealers, reweaving the seats on various pieces of furniture - first, on chairs needed caned seats, and then on other pieces as they brought them to me - my repertoire grew to include fibre and natural rush, splint, and Shaker Tape weaving techniques.

I have demonstrated the craft of chair caning and seat weaving at various festivals and events, including the 18th Century Days in Schuylerville, the Washington County Fair in Easton, NY, the Parks Bentley Place in South Glens Falls; as well as Great Camp Sagamore in Raquette Lake.  In addition, I have given classes through the Salem Central School Adult Continuing Education program, the Adirondack Folk School in Lake Luzerne and Great Camp Sagamore, as well as private lessons.

My work has been featured in the Folklife Center at Crandall Library, located in Glens Falls and at TAUNY in Canton.  In addition, my work can be found numerous private homes in the region, as well as at the Shushan Covered Bridge Museum, at Great Camp Sagamore, and the Salem Public Library.  Finally, I am a member of the Seatweavers’ Guild, an organization that promotes the teaching of seating
