Remember those lazy summer days on your canoe,
discovering the natural world with every paddle? Share
that experience as you build a classic cedar and
canvas canoe for a children's group. Connect with old-
world artisans as you employ their 18th-century tools
in the canoe's construction. Under the guidance of one
of only 10 North Americans knowledgeable in these
techniques, steam-bend cedar ribs and then shape and
tack on thin planking. With the finished form, install
the decks and cover the shell with cotton canvas.
Then, affix seats, thwarts and stem bands. Finally,
cane the seats and paddles for a finished cedar and
canvas canoe. Tours of Sagamore's historic buildings
and surroundings further your appreciation of
Adirondack heritage.

Gilded Age, when lavish wilderness retreats became
synonymous with the Adirondack region. Learn about
life at an Adirondack Great Camp from a variety of
social perspectives, while staying at Sagamore.

century, and how similar it is to our own experiences.
Focus - Music & Storytelling and their impact on
mountain culture.
Instructor, SUSAN TRUMP, has been winning fans with
her singing, her songwriting prowess and her
outstanding instrumental skill on mountain dulcimer,

ability to link the pastoral, tranquil images of
traditional rural America to our contemporary life.

You will see the Adirondacks the way the sports of
the Gilded Age saw it. You will stay at Sagamore, the
Vanderbilt great camp, and learn how
upstairs/downstairs was transferred to the woods. The
sports experienced a mere illusion of roughing it
while servants and Adirondack guides kept them
comfortable while far away from their city mansions.
Guides were a special breed of servant trusted to take
the wealthy into the woods and bring them back with
trophy game and fish. Meanwhile, guides had to set
comfortable camps, cook over open fires, and entertain
the sports. Part of the entertainment was showing
the sporting gentlemen beautiful vistas. The
Adirondacks are home to many splendid waterfalls, some
of them like the one near Sagamore with a history of
its own. Waterfalls were sacred places for native
Americans, inspiration for artists, and power sources
for the industrialization of America in the Gilded Age.
